A senior Mexico City tourism official who was on the flight resigned immediately after the incident was reported. The person carrying the money was identified as Juan Francisco Ealy Ortiz, president of El Universal newspaper. The newspaper later said that the money was “used for medical treatment and has been duly declared to Mexican officials”.
Even so, the presence of lavish elements such as private jets, fancy parties and a bag full of cash has seriously damaged Mr. Nito’s reputation. and prompted him to submit his resignation.
“It’s a matter of scandal, even if it’s a private event,” said President Lopez Obrador, accepting Nito’s resignation.
Nito has long been known as a trusted ally of the Mexican president during Lopez Obrador’s election campaign. The leader won the presidency thanks to his pledge to fight corruption.
