Vietnam to pilot open system around Cai Mep port
From mid-2022, an open system will be pilot tested on the terminals in Vietnam’s Cai Mep port, in a scheme to reduce logistics costs when moving containers across the port.
Vietnam’s central government agreed to the pilot test after a proposal submitted by the Ba Ria-Vung Tau provincial government.
Vehicles hired by operators of the terminals need to be allowed by the Ministry of Transport to access Highway 965 from the SP-PSA terminal to Gemalink International Port and vice versa. Customs clearance for containers transported to the terminals will also be expedited.
The eight terminals in Cai Mep include SP-PSA, Tan Cang-Cai Mep International Terminal, Tan Cang-Cai Mep Container Terminal, Cai Mep International Terminal, SP-SSA International Terminal and Gemalink International Port.
The terminals are scattered and many of them are limited in length of the pier (an average of 600m of docks/ port) while the size of ships calling at Cai Mep is increasing. This means that only one ship can be received by each terminal at any one time.
