Vietnam’s Soybean Imports: Challenges and Opportunities for the Logistics Industry
According to the latest data from the General Department of Customs, Vietnam’s soybean import activities in the first 8 months of 2024 have recorded notable fluctuations, creating both challenges and opportunities for the international shipping industry.
The total volume of imported soybeans reached nearly 1.45 million tons, valued at $754.48 million, with an average price of $521.6 per ton. Although the import volume increased by 5.2%, the turnover decreased by 13.95% due to an 18.2% price drop compared to the same period last year. This poses a challenge for transportation and logistics companies in maintaining economic efficiency when transporting larger volumes but with reduced cargo value.

Brazil continues to maintain its position as the largest soybean supplier to Vietnam, accounting for 59% of total imports. The 15.9% increase in volume from this market requires sea transportation services to optimize trans-Atlantic shipping processes to meet the growing demand.
The United States, despite a 5.6% decrease in volume, remains the second most important source, accounting for 32.5% of market share. This decline may create opportunities for forwarding companies to adjust strategies and find more efficient shipping solutions on Pacific routes.
Canada, with a 10.8% increase in volume, is emerging as a notable source. This opens up new opportunities for cargo shipping services, especially in developing new shipping routes from North America.
Despite a significant decline in August 2024, with import volume decreasing by 46.3% compared to the previous month, this could be an opportunity for logistics businesses to restructure and optimize shipping operations during the low season.
As the world’s 3rd largest importer of soybean meal and 9th largest importer of soybeans, Vietnam continues to be a potential market for import services and international shipping services. The stable demand of about 2 million tons of soybeans annually provides a solid foundation for shipping companies to develop specialized services.
The decrease in soybean prices combined with high live pig prices is creating dual benefits for Vietnam’s livestock industry. This could lead to increased import demand in the future, opening up new opportunities for international shipping services.
Overall, despite short-term challenges, Vietnam’s soybean import market remains full of potential for the logistics industry. To maximize this opportunity, shipping companies need to be flexible in adjusting strategies, invest in technology to optimize shipping processes, and expand international partner networks. In this way, the logistics industry can not only meet current transportation needs but also play an important role in promoting the sustainable development of Vietnam’s livestock and food processing industries.
