Vietnam Earns $52.6 Million from Star Anise Exports in the First 10 Months of 2024
According to data from the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA), logistics companies reported impressive results in transporting star anise in October 2024. Export services successfully shipped 1,330 tons of star anise, generating revenue of more than $5.8 million, a significant increase of 88.9% compared to the previous month. Notably, international shipping to the Indian market reached 903 tons, up by 121.3%, with Prosi Thăng Long leading in volume transported at 275 tons, a surge of 205.6%.
In the first 10 months of 2024, logistics companies supported the export of 11,152 tons of star anise, with a total estimated revenue of $52.6 million. Although this marked a decrease of 13.3% compared to the same period last year, the sector managed to maintain a significant market share in key markets. Forwarding companies focused on India, exporting 7,395 tons, accounting for 66.3% of total exports, followed by the United States with 411 tons and China with 358 tons.

As the world’s second-largest star anise producer, Vietnam’s logistics sector benefits from an annual output of approximately 22,000 tons cultivated on about 55,000 hectares. The container transport service is especially well-developed in Lạng Sơn—Vietnam’s star anise capital, with over 43,000 hectares, making up 72.7% of the country’s total cultivation area. Concentrated production in this region optimizes sea freight costs and enhances import-export efficiency.
The World Spice Organization recognizes the potential of Vietnam’s star anise transport sector, especially since this rare spice is only found in Vietnam and China. Logistics services have facilitated access to major markets such as South Asia, the Middle East, Japan, South Korea, the US, and the EU. Shipping companies are leveraging this advantage to provide affordable shipping services while maintaining high-quality standards for customers.
With the global spice and flavor market expected to grow from $21.3 billion in 2021 to $27.4 billion by 2026, transport enterprises need to continue investing in domestic and international container shipping. In particular, the development of organic star anise cultivation areas in Lạng Sơn will create new opportunities for international shipping services, meeting the growing global demand for high-quality, certified organic products.
