Japan-US container exports swell in March

According to Descartes Datamyne, container shipments from Japan to the United States reached 54,744 TEUs in March (based on volumes at Japanese ports of origin), up 14.9% from the previous month but down 5.8% from the same month in 2022.

Direct shipments from Japan to the United States were 33,765 TEUs, representing a 10.7% decrease year-on-year.

The total number of TEUs transshipped along the way was 20,979, breaking the 20,000-TEU barrier for the first time in 2023.

As for transshipment boxes, South Korea was responsible for 14,153 TEUs, which swelled 12.8%; and Taiwan, 3,380 TEUs, which increased a more notable 42.9%. In contrast, those transshipped in China plunged 23.7% to 2,433 TEUs and in Singapore, 54.6% to 539 TEUs.
