Senegal – A Potential Market for Agricultural and Food Products
Senegal is emerging as a strategic destination for Vietnam’s international import-export and freight activities in West Africa. With its international port in Dakar and a developed railway system, the country serves not only as a regional transshipment hub but also as a key gateway for Vietnamese businesses to penetrate the West African market through cross-border logistics services.
As a member of the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Senegal offers tariff advantages with a 0% intra-regional tariff. This greatly facilitates international transportation and Vietnam’s supply chain activities, serving not only Senegal’s 18.6 million consumers but also extending to neighboring countries like Mali, Guinea Bissau, Guinea, and Mauritania.

Senegal – A New Gateway for Vietnam’s Export and Logistics in West Africa
Senegal consistently reports a trade deficit, with an import value reaching $11.87 billion in 2023, compared to an export value of only $5.3 billion. The high demand for imports, especially for items such as rice (700,000-900,000 tons/year), petroleum products, vehicles, and machinery, creates opportunities for Vietnamese export and logistics companies to develop specialized freight services.
According to Vietnam Customs, Vietnam’s export turnover to Senegal reached $37.8 million in 2023. In the first nine months of 2024, exports stood at $26.5 million, with main products including pepper ($9.5 million), vegetables and fruits ($3.34 million), rice ($1.24 million), and confectionery ($1.6 million). This diverse product range requires Vietnam’s logistics sector to develop transportation and storage solutions tailored to each product type.
To seize these opportunities, Vietnam’s logistics industry should focus on expanding its maritime network connected to Dakar Port, optimizing the supply chain for agricultural exports, and establishing transshipment warehouses in Senegal. Collaborating with local logistics partners is also key to expanding distribution and transportation networks within the region.
With a projected GDP growth rate of 6% in Q4 2024, according to IMF forecasts, and the start of oil and gas exploitation, Senegal is set to become a strategic destination for Vietnam’s import-export activities in West Africa. This presents an opportunity for Vietnam’s logistics sector to broaden its operational scope and develop comprehensive international freight solutions to meet the growing demand of the African market.
