Vietnam – Sweden Cooperation: A Golden Opportunity for the Logistics Sector
At the recent Europe-America Regional Logistics Forum held in Ho Chi Minh City, Mr. Richard Mellgren, Senior Director of Business Development at the Port of Gothenburg, shared notable information about the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Port of Gothenburg, the Department of Industry and Trade of Hai Phong, and the Saigon Newport Corporation. This event took place within the framework of the Vietnam-Sweden Forum, marking 55 years of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
The Port of Gothenburg, the largest port in Northern Europe, is opening up significant opportunities for Vietnam’s international shipping sector. With over 11,000 ship calls per year and the capacity to handle 39 million tons of cargo, Gothenburg plays a crucial role in Sweden’s trade activities, accounting for nearly 30% of the country’s total foreign transactions.

Mr. Richard Mellgren speaking at the Europe-America Regional Logistics Forum.
The signing of the MOU is seen as a breakthrough in promoting logistics cooperation between businesses and localities from both sides. This promises to open new opportunities for transport and logistics companies, especially in the areas of maritime shipping and intercontinental transport.
Mr. Mellgren emphasized the vision of the Port of Gothenburg in ensuring that Sweden’s industry has access to global markets. The port is actively developing efficient and sustainable transport and logistics solutions, including the use of environmentally friendly fuels and the development of multimodal transport systems.
Notably, the Port of Gothenburg is anticipating the establishment of the first direct shipping route between Gothenburg and Vung Tau in the near future. This will create significant opportunities for overseas shipping services, while expanding the market for Vietnamese goods in Northern Europe.
This collaboration also aims at developing green logistics, with the goal of creating non-fossil fuel transportation corridors that combine maritime, rail, and electric vehicle transport. This will not only contribute to environmental protection but also improve efficiency and reduce costs in the supply chain.
With Vietnam, particularly the northern region, investing heavily in port infrastructure, the potential for cooperation between Hai Phong and Gothenburg is becoming increasingly clear. The prospect of a direct connection between these two ports in the future is no longer distant.
In summary, the cooperation between the Port of Gothenburg and its Vietnamese partners not only opens up development opportunities for the logistics industry but also has the potential to enhance bilateral trade relations. This is a crucial step toward building a modern, efficient, and sustainable maritime transport system, contributing to the economic development of both nations.
