Vietnam’s Iron and Steel Exports Earn Over $6.4 Billion in 8 Months
Vietnam’s steel industry is experiencing an impressive growth phase, opening up bright prospects for both manufacturing and freight forwarding services. According to the latest data from the General Department of Customs, August 2024 saw a surge in iron and steel exports, with a volume of 1.37 million tons, bringing in $941 million, up 32% in volume and 21% in value compared to the previous month. This growth creates a significant demand for transportation and logistics companies to meet the increasing shipping needs.
Looking at the overall picture for the first 8 months of the year, the export landscape is even more vibrant with 8.88 million tons of iron and steel exported, earning over $6.4 billion. This figure marks a considerable growth of 20.7% in volume and 14% in value compared to the same period last year. This boom is creating a new wave of demand for sea freight and ocean shipping, especially for high-volume goods like iron and steel.

In the first 8 months of 2024, exports of various iron and steel products reached 8.88 million tons, earning over $6.4 billion, an increase of 20.7% in volume and 14% in value compared to the same period.
Notably, the United States continues to maintain its position as the leading consumer market, with imports reaching 1.26 million tons, valued at $1.04 billion. The 16% growth in volume and 38% in value in this market not only reflects the improving quality of Vietnamese steel but also opens up great opportunities for forwarder companies to optimize trans-Pacific shipping routes.
Italy and Cambodia hold the second and third positions respectively in the list of largest export markets. Despite a slight decline in the Italian market, this diversification in market structure requires import and export service providers to be flexible in developing multinational shipping strategies.
Additionally, the explosive growth in markets such as Russia, Saudi Arabia, and Spain, with two to three-digit increases, is opening up new opportunities for the transportation industry. Shipping companies need to quickly grasp this trend to expand their network and optimize new shipping routes.
The Vietnam Steel Association (VSA) highly appreciates the industry’s prospects in 2024, forecasting that world steel prices may increase slightly by 3.5%. This not only benefits producers but also creates opportunities for international shipping services to enhance the added value of their services.
However, Mr. Nguyen Duc Dung from the Vietnam Commodity Exchange (MXV) warns about the possibility of a sluggish domestic market in September. This requires shipping companies to have flexible strategies, potentially focusing on the export market in the short term and preparing for the expected recovery in Q4/2024.
Overall, the strong growth of Vietnam’s steel industry is opening up a new horizon for the logistics industry. To maximize this opportunity, shipping companies need to invest in technology, optimize processes, and expand their network of international partners. In this way, the logistics industry not only strongly supports the development of the steel industry but can also become an important driving force in promoting Vietnam’s international shipping services on the global stage.
