Vietnam’s Rice Imports Surge in the First 9 Months
According to the latest data from the General Department of Customs, Vietnam’s rice sector is experiencing remarkable growth in 2024, with both exports and imports recording impressive increases. This boom not only benefits farmers and export-import businesses but also creates golden opportunities for Vietnam’s international logistics industry.
In the first nine months of the year, Vietnam exported over 7 million tons of rice, earning USD 4.37 billion, a 23.5% increase in export value compared to the same period last year. This strong growth has generated high demand for sea freight services, particularly for transporting large quantities of goods like rice.

Vietnam Spends USD 996 Million on Rice Imports in 9 Months
Notably, the average export price of Vietnamese rice reached USD 624 per ton, up 13.1% from last year. This not only reflects the improving quality of Vietnamese rice but also raises the bar for international shipping services to ensure the safety and quality of the product during transit.
On the other hand, rice import value also soared, reaching USD 996 million in nine months, a 57.3% increase compared to the same period last year. This is a record figure, surpassing the total import value of 2023. The significant rise in imports creates new demand for domestic transportation and import services.
The reason behind the sharp increase in imports is the diverse demand for different types of rice, ranging from rice for cooking to raw rice used in making cakes, noodles, and pho. This requires transport and logistics companies to be flexible in handling and transporting various types of rice, from finished products to raw materials.
The shift toward growing high-quality rice for export is also an important factor. Forwarding companies need to be prepared to meet the transportation demands for these high-quality rice varieties, ensuring the preservation of quality throughout the shipping process.
To fully capitalize on this opportunity, Vietnam’s logistics sector needs to focus on enhancing its capacity to transport large volumes of goods, invest in specialized warehousing systems for rice storage, and develop transportation solutions that ensure rice quality is maintained during transit. Optimizing shipping routes and strengthening partnerships with international logistics partners are also key factors in improving efficiency and reducing transportation costs.
In conclusion, Vietnam’s booming rice trade is opening new horizons for the logistics industry. By seizing this opportunity and continuously improving services, shipping companies can not only contribute to promoting rice exports and imports but also become a crucial force in enhancing Vietnam’s position in the global rice market.
