Vietnam Increases Cashew Nut Imports from Cambodia
According to statistics from the General Department of Customs, Vietnam’s cashew nut imports in May reached 234,784 tons, valued at over $272 million, a decrease of 22.3% in volume and 27.7% in value compared to the previous month. Cumulatively for the first five months of the year, the country imported over 1.1 million tons of cashew nuts with a turnover exceeding 1.4 million tons, an increase of 11.3% in volume and 4.4% in value compared to the same period last year. This has had a notable impact on the activities of transportation companies and goods shipping services in the import sector.

Vietnam Continues to Boost Cashew Imports from Cambodia
Cambodia remains Vietnam’s largest cashew nut supplier in the first five months of the year. By the end of May, the volume of cashew imports from Cambodia reached 759,421 tons, valued at over $971 million, an increase of 39% in volume and 29% in value compared to the same period in 2023. Besides Cambodia, Vietnam also imports cashew nuts from other markets including Ghana, Indonesia, Nigeria, Tanzania, and Ivory Coast. This diversity requires flexibility in sea freight services and container shipping.
Vietnam has maintained its position as the world’s number one exporter of cashew kernels for 16 consecutive years, accounting for nearly 80% of global production. The export target of $4 billion in 2024 poses significant challenges for the export shipping industry and forwarding companies. However, the dependence on imported raw materials (90%) is causing concerns for businesses. The shortage of input materials could lead to disruptions in the production chain, significantly affecting this year’s export turnover of the cashew industry. This demands flexibility in entrusted import services and logistics transportation.
The Vietnam Cashew Association reports that due to complete dependence on imports, the shortage of raw materials for processing is not uncommon in Vietnam’s cashew export industry. This challenge requires close cooperation between import-export businesses and transportation companies to ensure a stable supply chain.
To achieve the export turnover target of $4 billion in 2024, the cashew industry needs strong support from domestic and international container shipping services. Transportation companies and international shipping services need to have flexible strategies to meet transportation demands in the context of unstable raw material supply.
Given the challenges and opportunities of Vietnam’s cashew industry, the role of logistics services and international transportation is becoming increasingly important. With the support of the logistics industry, the export target of $4 billion in 2024 for Vietnam’s cashew industry is entirely feasible. This not only benefits the cashew industry but also promotes the development of Vietnam’s entire transportation and logistics system, strengthening the country’s position in the global value chain.
